Access to Electricity in Rural Senegal through Standalone Solar Power Systems
Publication date: 05.08.2022
Description: The German Development Cooperation through GIZ carries out a variety of projects that aim to improve electricity provision in rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa, including Senegal. Prior to the deployment of solar-powered mini-grid systems, RWI conducted a baseline study in two rounds of data collection, 2009 and 2011. A follow-up survey was then conducted in 2016. The survey covered both communities to be electrified and communities that did not receive access to electricity through the project.

Full Life-cycle Trial Periods as a Way to Stimulate the Adoption of more Efficient Bioenergy Technologies in Rural Senegal
Publication date: 01.05.2022
Description: The present data were collected as part of a field experiment that investigated the question of whether willingness to pay for improved cookstoves, and ultimately their acceptance, is increased by prior experience of use. The experiment was conducted among a sample of households that participated in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in 2009 and 2010. The Becker-DeGroot-Marschak method was used, coupled with a real purchase offer, to determine households' willingness to pay in an unbiased manner. A complementary household survey was conducted to investigate, among other things, how households make decisions regarding the choice of modern energy options.

Publication date: 01.05.2022
Description: The survey data covers a representative random sample of rural beneficiaries of the nationwide electrification project EARP (Electricity Access Rollout Programme, see Lenz et at., 2017). The data was collected before and after the electrification intervention, in the periods April-May 2011 and May-August 2013. The information covers relevant socio-economic aspects of the household including household composition, migration, health, and the financial situation as well as security and gender relevant issues. A particular focus of the general questionnaire is on energy usage, i.e. lighting, radio and cooking. This comprises for example questions on fuel consumption, and on activities after nightfall.

Willigness to pay for solar electricity in rural Rwanda
Publication date: 01.05.2022
Description: The dataset consists of primary, experimental data collected by RWI, Passau University and IBandC in Rwanda in 2015. In an experiment, payment schemes (7 days, 6 weeks, 5 months) were randomely assigned to 323 households, who were then offered three types of solar kits for purchase using a Becker-DeGroot-Marschak auction design. The dataset includes information on willigness to pay for the three solar kits, purchase information, and on the socioeconomic background of the households.

Impacts of Solar Home System Usage in Rural Burkina Faso
Publication date: 01.05.2022
Description: In remote areas with low electrification rates, Solar Home Systems (SHS) can be seen as a promising alternative to the investment-intensive extension of the electricity grid. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided funding to a project in Burkina Faso that offers SHS to rural households using a market-based approach. The SHS that are distributed can provide electric lighting and depending on the chosen capacity of the system allow for the usage of small electric appliances up to color television. RWI and ISS assess the socio-economic impact of the usage of SHS such as on living conditions, time savings, security, health conditions, and educational attainment. Following the roll-out plan of the local SHS service provider, a baseline survey was conducted in November 2010 based on a random sample of villages that are in the programs catchment area. In total, 1,200 households in 40 villages were interviewed. A follow-up survey was conducted two years after the baseline survey in November 2012.

Employment and income effects of interventions to spread efficient cookstoves and pico-PV systems
Publication date: 01.08.2021
Description: Improving access to more modern forms of energy requires supply chains that reach further into rural areas. RWI conducted an impact evaluation of the employment and income effects of an energy access intervention in Kenya, which is a large-scale program that supports the diffusion of improved cookstoves and small solar products. The underlying data was collected among 648 entrepreneurs in mid-2015. The sample of entrepreneurs comprises previously trained entrepreneurs who are active in their business for on average three years and people interviewed at the time of their training. Follow-up data was collected one and a half years later among the later training participants to identify those individuals who continue with the business.

Electricity access through village grids in rural Senegal - Sustainability success factors and the role of micro-finance
Publication date: 08.07.2021
Description: The lack of access to electricity hampers economic development and for many years, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have pursued an agenda of increasing electricity access in rural areas. However, the evidence on impacts of electrification is partly disappointing. It is often argued that it is the absence of complementary services such as access to formal microfinance that impedes higher and especially productive electricity consumption. In cooperation with a Senegalese MFI we randomly promoted microfinance products in villages that were electrified under a mini-grid program. The endline data collection took place from March to April 2019 included 1,281 households and 1,018 enterprises in 86 villages in rural Senegal.

Innovationsverhalten von Handwerksbetrieben in Deutschland Handwerksunternehmen
Publication date: 01.05.2004
Description: The data were collected within the scope of the project "Determinants of change of German craft enterprises" (Determinanten des Strukturwandels im deutschen Handwerk). The study aimed at analysing the determinants of structural change of German craft enterprises. Thereby, a special focus was laid on technological, demographic, and institutional factors as well as on thos pertaining to the production process organisation. The structural change of craft enterprises was analyesd on the economic, sectoral, and enterprise level. One question analyesd is whether changes in the market structure affected the identitiy of craft enterprises. The study of regulatory factors results in several conclusions pertaining, among others, to the future legislation concerning craft enterprises. The complexity of the research topic requires a broad set of methodological instruments. In particular, this refers to the use of primary statistics, ca. 60 interviews of experts, a written survey of craft enterprises and non-craft enterprises as the control group as well as a survey of firms in the construction sector around Lepizig. In the retrospective analysis the craft enterprise database of the RWI. The analysis of the current development of craft enterprises in selected sectors is base on an extrapolation based on administrative craft enterprise data (Handwerksberichterstattung, destatis).
