Description
Description: The lack of access to electricity hampers economic development and for many years, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have pursued an agenda of increasing electricity access in rural areas. However, the evidence on impacts of electrification is partly disappointing. It is often argued that it is the absence of complementary services such as access to formal microfinance that impedes higher and especially productive electricity consumption. In cooperation with a Senegalese MFI we randomly promoted microfinance products in villages that were electrified under a mini-grid program. The endline data collection took place from March to April 2019 included 1,281 households and 1,018 enterprises in 86 villages in rural Senegal.
